Wall Street Journal | Jailed Rape Victim Case Takes Focus in Texas District Attorney Race

(11/07/2016) Victims’ advocates and legal experts say there are a range of other options that prosecutors can use to ensure a rape or domestic violence victim testifies rather than detention. Such options include providing them with an advocate or counselor who can help address their concerns about coming forward safely, advocates said.

Jennifer Long, a former Philadelphia prosecutor who heads the group AEquitas: The Prosecutors’ Resource on Violence Against Women, said there is greater awareness among prosecutors that threatening rape and domestic violence victims with jail to compel their testimony could re-traumatize victims and keep others from coming forward.
